Course Description
Three presentations to cover the history of Kent Island in Queen Anne’s County. Kent Island was founded in 1631 by William Claiborne. It was the first Old World settlement in today’s Maryland. The course will offer three sections on the cultural, commercial, environmental and key historical events of Kent Island. 1. Kent Island History from 1631 through today will include the time of the Matapeake and other Native American tribes to its emergence as Gateway to the Eastern Shore to the Kent Island today. 2. Senator James Kirwan and Saving Kent Island from becoming a War Department testing ground prior to WW1 (today’s Aberdeen Proving Grounds.) The focus will be on early 20th Century life on Kent Island. 3. Transportation on Kent Island from the Wading Place to early ships, railroads, steamboats, Chesapeake ferry boats, and the Bay and Kent Narrows Bridges. Instructor: John Conley
