Slaves to Bishops: Story of Black Methodism Before the Civil War The class will investigate the origins of American Black Methodism and how it evolved into the variety of Black Methodism today. It will stress the unique role Black Methodism has in American society in the despite the severe restrictions put on their behavior and the counter-cultural role the Methodist Episcopal Church played in the development of Black Methodism. There will be particular focus on the unique role DelMarVa Peninsula played in its development and why the Delaware Conference was a unique organization in American society for 100 years. Instructor: Gary Moore Materials: Optional book for $15, "Slaves to Bishops: An American Story" Gary L. Moore is a retired United Methodist Elder and former Easton District Superintendent. He edited the Commemorative Booklet of the Delaware Annual Conference in 1990 and conducted oral histories of Delaware Conference leaders in the 1980s.
