Sourdough for Beginners

Tuesday, 9/15 (1 session) 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Kennard African American Cultural Heritage Center

Course Description

This course will go over the basics of baking fresh, homemade, delicious bread using flour, water, salt, and sourdough starter as the leavening agent. We’ll review why sourdough bread is easier to digest, what are the steps necessary to get that rise and crunch, and how to maintain a sourdough starter. Each participant will have the opportunity to mix, knead and shape a loaf of your own to take home to bake. They will also receive a small amount of starter to use for the next loaf. While we’re waiting for the bread to rest, rise and bake, we’ll snack on other sourdough creations and discuss different methods of combining these simple ingredients into something special. Resources for further study and recipes will be provided. It’s not as hard as you think – come try it! Limited to 6 participants Instructor: Cindy Nichols Fee: $5 for materials to be collected on the first day of class. Participants should bring a bowl and linen tea towel for their dough, as well as a container for their starter. Cindy Nichols is a speech-language pathologist in private practice in Queen Anne’s County. She learned the art of sourdough baking during the pandemic like many others - through YouTube. She loves how healthy and versatile sourdough bread is and enjoys the many variations that are possible, like focaccia, brioche, crackers, granola and pizza dough.
