Course Description

This course will examine America at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century through the prism of the Spanish-American War. It will explore the nature of American society and politics during the Gilded Age and why the U.S. decided to declare war on Spain, looking at both the short term and long-term causes. It will discuss the war itself and “explode” some of the myths that have arisen about the war. Finally, it will examine the war’s aftermath and how the conflict changed America and impacted the world. Instructor: Dennis Conrad
